The Government of South Sudan has procured 104 tractors to enhance agricultural productivity and bolster food security nationwide. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Planning, aims to support farmers and stimulate economic growth through mechanized farming.
At a handover ceremony on April 25, 2025, Agriculture Minister Hussein Abdelbagi Akol emphasized the government's commitment to revitalizing the agricultural sector. He urged farmers to be diligent and take full advantage of the new equipment to increase food production and contribute to the nation's economic recovery. The tractors, supplied by Aditya International Company, are part of a larger procurement plan totaling 500 units, with the remaining 396 tractors pending delivery upon completion of payment.
Deputy Minister of Finance Bech George Anyak highlighted that this procurement aligns with the government's strategy to diversify the economy beyond oil dependency. By investing in agriculture, the government aims to create sustainable livelihoods and ensure food self-sufficiency.
In preparation for the upcoming rainy season, the Economic Cluster has approved SSP 62 billion to support farming activities. Furthermore, state governors and chief administrators have been directed to allocate 250,000 hectares of land each for agricultural use, reinforcing the government's commitment to expanding arable land and supporting farmers.
This comprehensive approach underscores South Sudan's dedication to transforming its agricultural landscape, enhancing food security, and fostering economic resilience.
